A tragic car crash in the Libyan desert on Friday, resulted in the deaths of eleven Sudanese migrants and a Libyan driver.
Authorities reported that the accident occurred 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of the Libyan town of Kufra.
This devastating event marks the latest in a series of deadly incidents involving Sudanese individuals fleeing the ongoing civil war that began in their country in April 2023.
The crash also left a 65-year-old man and his 10-year-old son with injuries.
Ibrahim Abu al-Hassan, the director of Kufra’s Ambulance and Emergency Service, confirmed that among the deceased migrants were three women and two children.
This tragedy follows a similar incident earlier in May where seven Sudanese migrants were found dead after their vehicle broke down along a known trafficking route between Chad and Libya.
Libya has become a significant transit point for migrants from Africa and the Middle East seeking to reach Europe due to the instability that has plagued the nation since the NATO-backed uprising in 2011.
Human traffickers have exploited this instability for over a decade.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has forced thousands to flee, contributing to the migrant flow through Libya.
The civil war has already caused thousands of deaths, displaced over 14 million people, and led to famine in parts of Sudan.
