Tensions on the Sudan–Central African Republic frontier have raised fears that inter-communal violence between the Kara and Ta’isha could spread into the Birao camp hosting Sudanese refugees, residents and local leaders said.
A Sudanese refugee at the camp told local outlet Darfur24 that anxiety was mounting among refugees, particularly those from Arab tribes, after some received threats. Several displaced people have stopped going to the market and are staying inside the camp, the refugee said.
A community leader at the site said U.N. forces in the Central African Republic had reinforced their presence around the camp to protect refugees and advised them not to travel until calm returns.
Border areas between Sudan and the Central African Republic have been on edge amid fears of renewed clashes between the Ta’isha inside Sudan and the Kara inside CAR, residents said.
