Sudan’s railway authority has been forced to adjust some train schedules because of shortages of diesel needed to operate its locomotives, according to local Sudanese media.
Sudan Railways Corporation Director-General Musa al-Qoum al-Jahdi said locomotives consume significantly more fuel than road vehicles, leaving rail services vulnerable to the recent supply shortages.
He said train operations had been disrupted in recent days but had since returned to normal, adding that the railway authority’s operations were currently largely stable.
On services to Wad Madani, al-Jahdi said a registered shipment of cement was ready to be transported to the city, but shipping agents had not yet begun loading the cargo.
Trains would depart for Wad Madani once the loading process was completed, he said.
Al-Jahdi added that the fuel shortage had already affected smaller vehicles and said it had therefore been expected to have an impact on railway locomotives as well.
Sudan’s transport infrastructure has faced mounting pressure during the country’s prolonged conflict, with disruptions to fuel supplies and other essential services affecting movement in several parts of the country.
