Funding cuts shut Sudanese clinic, deepen hardship in Beli Sereif

The only health centre serving Beli Sereif in eastern Jebel Marra shut down earlier this year after funding cuts forced it to close, residents say.

Jebel Marra, a volcanic massif in Darfur, Sudan (spanning parts of Central, South, and North Darfur states), is currently controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army.

Ahmed Zein, a local volunteer, said the withdrawal of organisational support brought the clinic’s work to a halt, leaving the area without even basic medical services.

He said sick residents are now forced to travel long distances along rough, unsafe roads to seek treatment, often facing delays and uncertainty.

Residents also reported growing problems with access to clean drinking water after pumps and storage tanks stopped working due to a lack of maintenance.

They warned the breakdown has turned safe water into a daily struggle, worsening conditions for families already living in extreme hardship.

They described overcrowded conditions and limited services, with needs rising faster than aid can reach the community.

While some organisations have started distributing shelter materials, residents said food supplies remain critically insufficient for newly arrived families.
