Gold mine collapse in eastern Sudan kills many

A gold mine partially collapsed over the weekend in eastern Sudan, killing 11 miners, officials reported Sunday.

The accident took place at the Kersh al-Feel mine in Houeid, a desert town in the eastern Nile River province.

Seven additional workers were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, the state-run company said.

Sudanese Mineral Resources Limited Company halted all excavation activities at the site following the deadly collapse.

Authorities also renewed warnings to informal miners, urging them to avoid working in the hazardous area for their own safety.

Sudan ranks among the world’s top gold producers, yet mine collapses remain frequent due to poor safety regulations.

Tragic incidents have repeatedly struck the mining sector, exposing critical gaps in oversight and protection measures.

In 2023, a similar mine collapse claimed the lives of 14 workers, stirring public concern over mining conditions.

Another devastating collapse in 2021 resulted in 38 fatalities, marking one of the deadliest mining disasters in the country.

These recurring tragedies underscore the urgent need for improved safety protocols to protect miners’ lives in Sudan.
