Half a million at risk as floods threaten Sudan’s Red Sea and Darfur states

Heavy rains and flash floods have displaced families in North Darfur, as Sudan’s water ministry warned that more than 500,000 people face heightened flood and torrent risks across the Red Sea and Darfur states.

In a bulletin on Tuesday, the Sudan Meteorological Authority forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over most states, alongside strong winds and higher humidity in parts of the country.

The International Organization for Migration said downpours and flooding swept through Dar El Salam locality in North Darfur, displacing 87 families from Abyat Jaleedat village in Um Kaddada. Field teams reported 182 homes destroyed and several shops damaged, with another 210 houses partially affected.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources’ Early Warning Unit issued an alert of medium-to-high risk of sudden floods in multiple states, covering 11 locations in Red Sea, 96 in North Darfur and eight in Central Darfur. The ministry estimated populations at risk at roughly 5,866 people in Red Sea and 614,500 in North Darfur, with an additional 1,278 people exposed in South Darfur.

Authorities urged residents to avoid low-lying areas and wadis, prepare for immediate evacuation if conditions worsen, secure property and livestock, and prioritize vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women and the elderly.
