Heavy rains, floods kill 14 in northern and southern Sudan

At least 14 people have died in northern and southeastern Sudan as relentless rains and floods battered homes and villages. In River Nile State, six people were killed when collapsing houses succumbed to torrential rains, raising the local death toll to ten.

In Sennar State, a mother and three children perished after a room in their home collapsed under the heavy downpour. Witnesses reported that flooding swept through towns in River Nile State, triggering power outages and destroying dozens of buildings.

The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors confirmed 154 homes were damaged in River Nile State, leaving 1,078 people displaced. Authorities and humanitarian agencies were urged to urgently deliver essential aid, including food, water, and temporary shelter, to affected families.

Sudan faces seasonal heavy rainfall from June to October, often resulting in widespread flooding and significant property damage. The calamities strike amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war, where clashes between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces have devastated communities since April 2023.

The conflict has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced millions to flee, leaving vulnerable populations exposed to natural disasters. Experts warn that flooding and rain-related destruction could worsen without coordinated emergency response and long-term disaster preparedness strategies.
