Heavy rains in eastern Sudan displace thousands

At least 2,800 people have been displaced and 660 homes damaged by severe floods in eastern Sudan, the IOM reported Thursday.

Flooding struck several villages, including Dar Al-Salam, Bazoura, and Um Al-Khair in Gedaref State, leaving communities reeling and vulnerable.

“Field teams estimate 560 houses were destroyed and 100 partially damaged. Many displaced sought shelter with host families nearby,” the UN agency said.

On Wednesday, Sudanese authorities reported 14 deaths from floods and heavy rains in Nile River and Sinnar states.

The deluge caused hundreds of homes to collapse, displacing thousands and compounding the hardships for already struggling residents.

Sudan experiences seasonal heavy rains from June through October, which regularly trigger large-scale flooding across the country.

This year’s natural disasters strike amid a brutal war between the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.

The ongoing conflict has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to UN and local authorities.

US university research, however, estimates the conflict’s death toll at around 130,000, highlighting the devastating scale of the crisis.

Floods and war together are deepening humanitarian needs, leaving communities vulnerable to displacement, disease, and the collapse of basic infrastructure.
