Heavy rains kill 32 people, injure over 100 in Sudan: Health ministry

At least 32 people have been killed and 107 others injured due to recent torrential rains and floods that have hit several states in Sudan, the Health Ministry reported on Monday.

“Seven states were affected by the rains and floods, and 5,575 homes were damaged,” said Al-Fadil Mohamed Mahmoud, director of the general directorate of health emergencies at the ministry, in a statement.

The ministry also reported a rise in cases of diarrhea, with more than 100 cases in Kassala, Khartoum, and Gezira states. Mahmoud said the ministry would adopt necessary measures to combat epidemics common during the rainy season.

The Sudanese Meteorological Authority had earlier informed citizens to be alert and avoid the banks of seasonal rivers. Heavy rains in the past have claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed agricultural land in Sudan.

Since April last year, Sudan has been witnessing a deadly conflict between the Sudanese army (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF), resulting in numerous casualties.

According to the United Nations, an estimated 10.7 million people are now internally displaced in Sudan, with about 2.2 million others seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
