ICC convicts Ali Kushayb; seeks Bashir, Haroun, Hussein extradition

The International Criminal Court on Monday found Ali Mohammed Ali Abdel-Rahman, known as “Ali Kushayb,” guilty on 27 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including rape, murder and persecution, over atrocities committed in Darfur more than two decades ago.

Following the verdict, the court called on the Port Sudan SAF junta—the de facto authorities loyal to General al-Burhan’s army (SAF)—to hand over ousted president Omar al-Bashir, as well as former interior minister Ahmed Haroun and former defence minister Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein, who remain wanted on related charges.

Kushayb surrendered to the ICC in 2020. A separate hearing will be scheduled to determine his sentence.
