IGAD urges halt to Sudan fighting as violence intensifies

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has voiced deep concern over escalating military operations, warning that the violence threatens to destabilise Sudan further.

In a statement, the regional bloc called for an immediate halt to hostilities, saying continued fighting would worsen the humanitarian crisis already affecting millions of Sudanese civilians.

IGAD warned that the latest escalation risks undermining efforts to reach a peaceful and negotiated settlement to the conflict, which has devastated large parts of the country.

The organisation urged all parties to protect civilians and critical infrastructure and to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.

Reiterating its long-held position, IGAD said there is no military solution to Sudan’s conflict and called on rival sides to engage in meaningful dialogue without preconditions.

The bloc stressed that the safety and welfare of the Sudanese people must take precedence over political and military objectives, while expressing solidarity with citizens affected by the ongoing crisis.
