The conflict in Sudan intensified this week as airstrikes, attributed to foreign forces backing General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and allied militias, have drawn condemnation from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement released on Tuesday, the RSF described these airstrikes as a calculated campaign aimed at sowing terror, targeting civilian areas, and crippling essential infrastructure.
According to the RSF, these attacks have escalated dramatically over the past 48 hours, with tragic consequences. On Saturday evening, airstrikes reportedly devastated the historic Libyan Market west of Omdurman and the 13 Market in Eastern Nile, resulting in what the RSF termed a “massacre” that claimed the lives of 650 civilians and left many more injured.
The RSF statement emphasized that this assault led to catastrophic loss and suffering, with entire families affected by the violence.
The RSF further alleged that the SAF’s campaign extends beyond Omdurman to other cities and regions, including Nyala, Al-Kuma, Saraf Omra, Al-Da’ein, Al-Geneina, Gezira, Sennar, and the capital, Khartoum.
They accused the SAF of systematically targeting bustling marketplaces, public gatherings, and essential infrastructure, resulting in widespread civilian casualties and significant damage to the nation’s critical assets.
Characterizing these strikes as an attempt to undermine Sudan’s unity and future, the RSF statement said that the SAF, supported by foreign allies and elements of the Islamic Movement, had turned the national military into an instrument of oppression.
The RSF labeled these actions as efforts to subdue the population and disrupt the nation’s fabric through force.
In their message, the RSF asserted their commitment to defending Sudan’s people and pledged to continue their resistance.
The statement called for solidarity among Sudanese citizens and expressed the RSF’s determination to establish a professional, unified military that serves the nation without allegiance to any ideology or faction.
The RSF concluded with a promise to pursue justice, democracy, and equality, vowing not to cease their efforts until peace and dignity are restored to Sudan.
