Insufficient funding puts aid for Sudanese refugees in jeopardy

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) faces a critical threat in aiding Sudan refugees in Chad due to funding constraints amid escalating humanitarian needs.

Over a million individuals, many of whom fled Sudan’s conflict, are at risk of losing vital assistance, warns the UN.

Sudan’s seven-month civil war, involving the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led over six million people to flee their homes.

Approximately 450,000 have sought refuge in Chad, as reported by the UN’s refugee agency.

The UN’s deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, emphasized the urgent need for $185 million (£150 million) to sustain aid for crisis-affected populations in Chad for the next six months.

Without this funding, the WFP anticipates suspending food aid in December for internally displaced persons and refugees in Chad.

Moreover, in January, assistance will cease for all beneficiaries across Chad, including new arrivals from Sudan, if the required funding isn’t secured.
