Preliminary contacts are under way to arrange consultations between the five-member international mechanism on Sudan and the Sumoud civilian coalition led by former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok, according to a source cited by Sawt al-Umma newspaper.
The proposed meeting is being considered for the second half of October, but no final date has been agreed, the source said.
The international grouping, known as the quintet, comprises the United Nations, African Union, Arab League, European Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The anticipated consultations with Sumoud form part of broader efforts to engage Sudanese civilian forces in ending the fighting and restoring a political process, the source added.
Last week, representatives of the quintet met jointly with the Quad — the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates — on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, the newspaper reported.
Regional and international participants discussed coordinating diplomatic efforts to halt Sudan’s war and advance a political settlement.
The proposed Sumoud meeting would extend those consultations as mediators seek wider civilian engagement in efforts to end the conflict.
