IOM: Sudan war has triggered world’s largest displacement crisis

Sudan is enduring the world’s largest displacement crisis after more than two years of war, the International Organization for Migration has said.

The conflict between the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces has uprooted millions, tearing families apart and hollowing out entire communities.

“From mothers fleeing with newborns to students separated from their families, people face immense hardship,” the UN agency said on social media platform X.

IOM said funding from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund is helping deliver urgent protection and life-saving humanitarian assistance.

The fund, alongside the Red Cross and Red Crescent network, provides rapid emergency financing during conflicts and natural disasters worldwide.

On the ground, the RSF controls most of Darfur’s five states, while Burhan’s army holds large areas elsewhere, including Khartoum.

Fighting erupted in April 2023 after a power struggle between former allies, plunging Sudan into violence and political collapse.

Since then, thousands have been killed, millions displaced, and a once-fragile nation pushed deeper into humanitarian catastrophe.
