Italy and Egypt discuss urgent steps to end Sudan war

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held a phone call with Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty on Wednesday.

The ministers discussed Sudan’s ongoing conflict, underlining the urgent need for a comprehensive ceasefire to restart political negotiations and protect civilians.

Tajani informed Egypt about the launch of Italy’s “Italy for Sudan” initiative, sending humanitarian aid to refugees, particularly vulnerable children in Port Sudan.

The mission will operate in collaboration with local Christian organisations, aiming to alleviate the humanitarian crisis engulfing the war-torn nation.

Sudan’s conflict began on April 15, 2023, as clashes erupted between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, leaving thousands dead.

Millions have been displaced by the fighting, which has fractured the country and created widespread shortages of food, medicine, and shelter.

The RSF now controls all five Darfur states in western Sudan, while Burhan’s army maintains authority over most remaining regions, including Khartoum.

Both ministers emphasised the importance of diplomatic efforts to transform humanitarian urgency into concrete steps toward peace and long-term stability.
