Libya’s Public Prosecutor has opened an investigation into a migrant boat sinking off Tobruk that killed 38 people, including Sudanese nationals, amid suspicions of a smuggling network behind the operation.
Authorities say organised groups are believed to be profiting from dangerous Mediterranean crossings using unsafe vessels.
Prosecutors also seized 300,000 Libyan dinars, suspected of being linked to smuggling activity.
Days earlier, 116 migrants were rescued near Tobruk after their boats broke down, most of them from Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
The International Organization for Migration reports rising deaths on Mediterranean routes, with more than 180 in recent weeks and nearly 1,000 so far in 2026, underscoring the continued risks of the crossing.
