Media blackout in Um Rawaba as SAF mass executions are reported

A source confirmed to Al-Tayyar that widespread executions are taking place in Um Rawaba, North Kordofan amid a media blackout, following General al-Burhan’s army’s (SAF) announcement of regaining control of the city on Thursday.

The executions targeted several local citizens and were carried out based on a list of names held by the jihadist Al-Bara Brigades.

The individuals targeted were reportedly residents of the area who were accused of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their prior control of the city.

Social media activists circulated a photo showing that members of the Islamic Movement (Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood), in collaboration with the SAF, executed the regional educational director in rural central Um Rawaba, Mr. Al-Tayeb Abdullah, after entering the city.

Activist Mohamed Khalifa shared on Facebook that the executions involved several individuals accused of aiding the RSF. He also highlighted that the SAF had bombarded the city earlier, prompting a large number of citizens to protest.

However, all those visible in video footage documenting the protests were later executed.

Further reports from a resident of Al-Obeid revealed a total media blackout on the events in Um Rawaba since the SAF took control, compounded by ongoing communication service disruptions, which make it difficult to obtain accurate information.

Details about the role of the Al-Bara Brigades, fighting alongside the SAF in the city, remain scarce, and trusted information is hard to come by.

Social media activists have warned of the dangers of targeting civilians accused of collaborating with the RSF, emphasizing the need to prevent civilian populations from being dragged into military conflicts.

Residents of Um Rawaba are increasingly concerned that the SAF may carry out revenge operations against the youth under accusations of collaboration or espionage with the RSF, a scenario previously witnessed in other cities like Wad Madani and Bahri after the SAF’s takeover.

Um Rawaba is a strategic city in North Kordofan, located about 301 kilometers from Khartoum. It is an important commercial hub, especially for oilseed trade, and serves as a vital crossroads connecting Western Sudan and South Kordofan to Khartoum and Port Sudan.

Since the conflict began in mid-April, North Kordofan has witnessed repeated violent battles as the SAF seeks to assert its control over the state while RSF forces launch attacks to seize it, as seen in Darfur, Al-Jazeera, and Sennar states.
