More than 5,000 people have fled 10 villages in Sudan’s West Darfur state amid renewed fighting and worsening insecurity, the UN migration agency says.
The International Organization for Migration said Sunday that 5,135 people had been displaced from Sirba locality as of Aug. 8.
The displacement followed fighting in the Bir Saliba area, where Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have repeatedly clashed.
Most affected families crossed into neighbouring Chad, highlighting the conflict’s growing humanitarian impact.
The strategically important area lies north of West Darfur’s capital, El Geneina, along key routes leading to the city.
Sudan has been gripped by a brutal war between the army and RSF since April 2023, when disputes over military integration erupted into open conflict.
The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s largest displacement crises.
By the end of June, the IOM had recorded about 8.69 million internally displaced people across Sudan.
The agency also recorded more than 4.64 million people who had returned to areas inside Sudan or come back from abroad.
