Small white flying insects have appeared in large numbers across several neighbourhoods in southern Khartoum, raising concern among residents who say some people have developed eye irritation and allergy-like symptoms.
Local activists reported concentrations of the insects in areas along the eastern bank of the White Nile, including Al-Kalakla, Al-Shuqailab, Al-Futaih and Tayba Al-Hasanab, extending south towards Jebel Aulia.
Residents said the insects have been arriving in large swarms from the direction of the Nile before spreading into nearby residential areas.
Some residents reported inflammation and irritation of the eyes, describing symptoms resembling conjunctivitis. They said they believed the symptoms were linked to the recent spread of the insects, although no official medical assessment establishing a connection has been announced.
Residents called on health authorities and environmental health departments to intervene and carry out spraying operations along the Nile riverbank to contain the infestation.
The type of insect involved has not yet been officially identified, according to local Sudanese media.
