The National Mechanism for Democratic Transition (NMDT) has unveiled a comprehensive national project aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Sudan and paving the way for a permanent constitution.
The project, which was announced at a press conference in Port Sudan on January 6, 2024, calls for a national ceasefire, the integration of armed movements into the regular forces, and the formation of a national emergency government.
NMDT Executive Office head Professor Montaser Zain Al-Abidin said that the project is based on the principle that Sudan belongs to all Sudanese. He emphasized the need for a peaceful, political solution to the conflict, stating that “the path to security and stability lies not in war, but in a national solution negotiated by all parties.”
Al-Abidin also stressed the importance of involving experts and interested parties in the peace process. “We must leverage the knowledge and wisdom of nationals and relevant experts to develop a sustainable peace plan,” he said.
NMDT head Ahmed Al-Tayeb echoed Al-Abidin’s sentiments, reiterating the necessity of a definitive and irreversible end to hostilities. He proposed the formation of a national emergency government as the optimal first step, followed by an immediate ceasefire agreement.
“Without a legal document guaranteeing the peace process and concrete steps towards a brighter future, our efforts will be in vain,” Al-Tayeb said. He further emphasized the importance of establishing a competent government and conducting free and fair elections once stability is achieved.
The NMDT’s national project offers a pathway towards peace and sustainable progress in Sudan. It remains to be seen whether all stakeholders will embrace this initiative and work together to usher in a new era of prosperity and unity for the Sudanese people.
