Nearly 65,000 flee Kordofan as insecurity deepens in Sudan

Nearly 65,000 civilians have fled Sudan’s Kordofan region in the past three months, driven by worsening insecurity and fear. The International Organization for Migration said about 64,890 people were displaced between October 25 and December 30, 2025.

Families escaped from towns and villages across North, South, and West Kordofan as daily life became increasingly unsafe. IOM teams recorded 56 separate displacement incidents during the period, highlighting repeated waves of civilian flight.

North Kordofan saw the largest movement, with around 42,780 people forced to leave their homes. In South Kordofan, nearly 21,860 civilians were displaced, while about 250 fled the Geibaish area in West Kordofan.

Many displaced people travelled with few belongings, seeking shelter in unfamiliar and often overcrowded areas. The agency said the figures remain preliminary and may rise as insecurity continues to limit access and reporting.

Prolonged fighting has disrupted livelihoods, basic services, and access to food, deepening humanitarian needs. Since April 2023, the conflict in Sudan has displaced millions, leaving civilians to bear the heaviest cost.
