
A measles vaccination campaign is set to begin on Wednesday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, amid a continued rise in infections among children.
The campaign, overseen by the state Ministry of Health and supported by UNICEF, aims to vaccinate 429,316 children across Nyala North locality, Nyala Municipality and East Jebel locality, according to media reports.
Data from the General Directorate of Emergencies at the Ministry of Health shows that 35 new measles cases were recently recorded in Nyala. Of these, 26 children were admitted to the isolation centre at Nyala Teaching Hospital, while nine others received treatment at the Italian Emergency Hospital.
Health authorities said the total number of measles cases recorded during 2025 reached 2,209, including 19 deaths. Most infections and fatalities were concentrated in Nyala North locality, Nyala Municipality and East Jebel locality.
The report added that the outbreak has now spread to 12 of the 21 localities in South Darfur State, raising concerns among health officials and prompting calls for increased vaccination coverage and community awareness.
