Nyala rolls out new banknotes to prevent fake money

Authorities in Nyala have begun circulating new banknotes to curb the spread of counterfeit US dollars and forged Sudanese pound notes.

The move comes as traders and money transfer operators report a sharp rise in fake local and foreign currency across South Darfur’s largest commercial hub.

Sources say that organised counterfeiting networks are circulating suspected forged banknotes, exploiting the lack of counterfeit detection devices among many traders.

Sources said some groups buy counterfeit currency below face value before reinjecting it into local markets or moving it through border crossings.

Traders also reported growing confusion caused by the circulation of old, damaged and newly issued Sudanese banknotes alongside suspected counterfeit notes.

The rollout of new banknotes coincides with intensified inspections of money transfer centres and currency traders as authorities step up efforts to combat counterfeiting.
