Power outage in two Sudanese states after drone attack

A drone strike on the Atbara power station in northern Sudan has caused a significant blackout across the River Nile and Red Sea states.

The attack, which took place on Friday, also ignited a large fire at the station, according to Sudan’s Electricity Company.

The company confirmed that unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the Atbara substation, disrupting electricity supplies to the affected regions.

Civil defense teams are currently battling the fire, while technical crews assess the damage and prepare for repairs.

This assault marks the latest in a series of drone attacks on Sudan’s power infrastructure, with previous strikes damaging key facilities in Merowe, Dongola, Al-Dabba, and Atbara.

The escalating violence follows ongoing conflict between the RSF and General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-led forces, which began on April 15, 2023.

The war has devastated the country, claiming over 20,000 lives and displacing 15 million people, according to the United Nations and local officials.

However, U.S. scholars estimate the death toll at approximately 130,000.

As Sudan grapples with its dire humanitarian crisis, the impact of these ongoing attacks continues to exacerbate the suffering of the nation’s population.
