Hundreds of people took to the streets in Port Sudan on Wednesday after a child who had been handed over to police three years ago was reported missing, sparking anger and accusations against authorities.
Demonstrators blocked the road near the Family and Child Court and burned tyres in protest over the disappearance of Montaser Osman Idris. Protesters accused the Child Protection Police unit of abduction, negligence and failing to take responsibility, particularly as the child allegedly vanished from within police facilities.
The unrest comes amid growing fears that the situation could escalate into wider security instability in Red Sea state, with concerns over clashes between protesters and authorities. Witnesses said roads were shut down and traffic disrupted as demonstrators intensified their actions.
The protests erupted hours after a meeting between local community leaders and Red Sea state police failed to produce any resolution regarding the child’s fate.
