Railway workers in General Abdel Fattah al Burhan junta-held Port Sudan began an open-ended sit-in on Tuesday, protesting what they described as government inaction over unresolved financial and administrative demands.
Workers said their requests had been submitted but received no practical response, prompting the escalation of protests.
Key demands include cancelling a summons against one worker, reinstating another employee, and paying delayed housing, meal, and holiday allowances.
Protesters are also seeking the disbursement of 50,000 pounds previously approved for late 2025 and early 2026 financial entitlements.
The sit-in involves workers from multiple railway departments, while electricity and water teams were excluded to maintain essential public services.
Organisers said railway authorities summoned several protest representatives to Atbara after the demonstration began, insisting the move would not halt the action.
Workers noted average monthly salaries remain about 120,000 pounds, unchanged since 2012, despite rising living costs and increasing economic hardship.
No official comment had been issued by railway authorities or government institutions at the time of publication.
