In a recent development amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have declared the capture of another significant town and a military base within Gezira state.
According to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the RSF announced the liberation of the second infantry division of the Sudanese armed forces in al-Hasaheisa town.
This comes on the heels of their recent takeover of Wad Madani, the state’s capital, after intense clashes with Sudan’s regular army over several days.
The clashes in Wad Madani have resulted in a substantial loss of life, with the Preliminary Committee of Sudan Doctors’ Union reporting 300 fatalities and tens of others sustaining injuries during the military confrontations.
The violence has triggered a mass exodus, with approximately 300,000 individuals fleeing Wad Madani since the conflict erupted, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency.
Gezira state holds immense strategic importance, being a pivotal agricultural center situated to the south of the capital, Khartoum.
Analysts suggest that the RSF’s control over this region could facilitate their advancement towards other states under the control of the national army, particularly in the eastern, central, and south-eastern parts of the country. This progression potentially sets the stage for further confrontations and shifts in territorial control within Sudan.
