Red Cross urges Sudan talks for aid surge

The Red Cross hopes upcoming talks on Sudan will lead to increased humanitarian aid and address ceasefire hurdles, said Mirjana Spoljaric, the organization’s chief.

She calls the authorities to help with concrete steps to improve aid access.

The U.S. invited Sudan’s warring sides to Switzerland for ceasefire talks last month, more than a year after fighting erupted between Al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces.

This conflict has caused a severe humanitarian crisis.

Spoljaric highlighted the dire situation in Sudan, calling it a “humanitarian disaster” and stressing the need for agreements to enhance aid and access, particularly in Darfur’s northern region.

Speaking at the Geneva headquarters, Spoljaric urged for tangible humanitarian actions to build trust and remove obstacles to a ceasefire.

The event coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions.

The Sudan conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and over 10 million displaced individuals.

A UN report revealed that about 26 million people are facing acute food insecurity.
