Refugee committee accuses SAF of turning camps into battlefields

The General Coordination of Displacement Camps and Refugees has accused General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) and its Islamist allies of transforming displacement camps into battle zones.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in response are reportedly imposing blockades and launching attacks on these camps.

These allegations come as the security situation in the region has deteriorated significantly, exacerbating the suffering of displaced people living under harsh conditions.

In the Zamzam camp in El Fasher, heavy clashes erupted between the SAF and Islamist forces on one side, and the RSF on the other.

The fighting resulted in multiple casualties, further escalating tensions in the area as both sides vie for control of territory. The violence has raised concerns over the safety of civilians in the camps.

Adam Rajal, spokesperson for the coordinating body, condemned the SAF’s conversion of refugee shelters into conflict zones, describing it as unethical and unacceptable. He highlighted the suspension of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) operations in Zamzam and the halt of several other humanitarian organizations, which signals an imminent danger to the displaced population and worsens the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

Rajal called on all warring factions to cease hostilities, stating, “It is time to stop playing with the lives of civilians. Move away from residential areas, abandon your selfishness, and end this insane war, which is committing severe violations against innocent citizens.”

He emphasized the need to halt support for the warring parties and urged serious efforts to achieve peace and end the conflict, stressing that the war that began on April 15 should be the last of its kind in Sudan.
