Sudanese army intensifies air strikes in Khartoum despite ongoing Saudi and US-mediated negotiations to cease the escalating conflict.
Despite talks brokered in Jeddah by Saudi Arabia and the US aimed at quelling the unrest, the Sudanese army’s bombardment of the capital city, Khartoum, has seen a marked escalation.
Hopes for a resolution were dashed as discussions between the army and the Rapid Support Forces failed to yield progress. Ahmed Abdallah, a resident of Omdurman, adjacent to Khartoum, relayed to media that the army’s aggressive artillery fire frequently hits civilian residences.
Efforts in Jeddah, which commenced in June and later resumed in October, hit a roadblock this week. According to media reports, Sudanese sources present at the meetings confirmed their adjournment without a new agreement.
The ongoing conflict, spanning several months, has led to the displacement of over 6.5 million people, economic devastation, and ethnic-based violence, notably in Darfur, characterized by appalling massacres.
