Rights lawyer: Kushayb verdict is historic, ends impunity

Sudanese lawyer and human rights defender Ma’ez Hazra called the International Criminal Court’s verdict against Ali Kushayb “historic,” saying it delivers long-awaited signals to victims that justice is finally taking shape after more than 22 years.

Speaking to Alrakoba, Hazra said the most important impact of the decision is the sense of relief it brings to survivors and families following Kushayb’s conviction. He said the ruling carries a clear message that those responsible will not escape accountability, adding that convicting Kushayb on 27 counts effectively indicts the former regime he served, which he accused of widespread abuses. He expects a deterrent sentence and said the ruling warns former regime figures implicated in crimes that the era of impunity has ended.

The ICC found Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, guilty on 27 counts related to atrocities committed in Darfur.
