RSF claims new gains in Kordofan, says it is advancing on Al-Obeid

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said on Thursday that it had captured two areas south of the strategic city of Al-Obeid in North Kordofan and was advancing on General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) positions.

The RSF said its forces took control of the areas of Hammadi and Kazgeel and were pushing further toward what it called “the strongholds of the Islamic Movement’s terrorist army,” in a statement issued late Thursday.

“This operation is part of our carefully planned military strategy to expand operational fronts in preparation for seizing the enemy’s bases and eliminating its terrorist militias,” the statement said.

RSF forces claimed to have inflicted heavy losses on SAF junta troops and captured large quantities of weapons and equipment. “Dozens of mercenaries fled under the weight of the strong blows,” it said.

Al-Obeid, a key city linking Sudan’s capital with the western regions, has been a critical front in the ongoing civil war that began in April 2023 between the RSF and General al-Burhan’s SAF

The RSF statement concluded by vowing to continue its advance, saying it was committed to “liberating the entire nation” and ending decades of marginalization suffered by communities in Sudan’s peripheries.

The SAF junta has not commented on the RSF’s latest claims.

The fighting in Sudan has killed thousands and displaced millions, with both sides trading control over large swaths of territory amid a spiraling humanitarian crisis.
