RSF clamp down on looting routes

Local residents in North Darfur said on Tuesday that the Rapid Support Forces, RSF, have stepped up security measures on the road linking Zamzam displacement camp to the town of Tabit, in an effort to curb the movement of looted property from El Fasher.

According to residents, RSF forces increased monitoring and patrols along the route, around 45 kilometres south west of El Fasher, following concerns over the spread of stolen goods into nearby markets. The move comes after reports that Tabit’s weekly market had been flooded with items taken from the city.

Residents told media that several vehicles transporting looted property were intercepted in recent days. The goods were confiscated as part of efforts to deter looting and restore order, with those involved released after questioning.

Local sources said no new looted goods have entered Tabit over the past week, attributing the change to the tighter controls imposed by RSF on roads connecting El Fasher and Zamzam camp. They added that market activity has declined, reflecting the impact of the security measures.

The steps come amid wider efforts to stabilise El Fasher, where residential neighbourhoods and public institutions had suffered extensive looting during the fighting. Residents said the enforcement campaign has helped limit further losses and curb the illegal trade in stolen property.
