RSF closes in on Burhan’s last Darfur stronghold

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are closing in on General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s SAF’s 6th Division in El Fasher, in a calculated and steady advance.

RSF units reportedly neutralized SAF snipers in nearby high-rises and are now clearing fortified zones and minefields around the division. Military sources describe the RSF operation as precise and efficient, conducted with minimal losses and high tactical discipline on the battlefield.

Earlier, the RSF seized Hajar Gado market, just metres from the division’s gates, tightening their grip on the besieged city.El Fasher, long a SAF stronghold, is now largely under RSF control, with only the Sixth Division holding out.

Analysts suggest the RSF may delay a final assault, awaiting the announcement of a “founding” government to maximise political impact.

If the division falls, Burhan’s SAF will lose its last major military base in the Darfur region, a critical setback.

The RSF would gain access to heavy weaponry, armoured vehicles, and a symbolic victory, further solidifying its strength across western Sudan. Control of El Fasher would give the RSF undisputed command over all five Darfur states, bolstering its standing as a military and political power.

Burhan’s alliance with Darfur-based armed movements may fracture under pressure to retake the city, exposing deep internal rifts. Such a defeat could weaken SAF’s legitimacy, spark internal dissent, and invite growing calls for national mobilisation or foreign intervention.

The RSF may also use El Fasher as a launchpad to push into North Kordofan, El Obeid, or even Omdurman, expanding the conflict’s frontlines.

The fall of El Fasher would mark a pivotal shift in Sudan’s civil war, with far-reaching implications for the country’s fragile future.
