RSF condemns Sudanese army’s indiscriminate bombing in North Darfur

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and “its extremist allies associated with the former regime” against all “ethical norms and military doctrine” carried out another “heinous” attack against civilians in Mellit, North Darfur, Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said on Friday.

“Today, SAF warplanes conducted an indiscriminate bombing campaign, dropping over 17 barrel bombs on the western outskirts of Mellit in North Darfur.”

“The target of this heinous attack was a herd of more than 300 camels, resulting in the deaths of seven shepherds and the loss of hundreds of livestock,” the Sudanese group said.

The latest attack follows a patter of violence that has become the calling card of the SAF and deliberate targeting of civilians and infrastructure demonstrates a flagrant violation of international law, RSF added.

In response to these attacks, RSF reiterated its commitment to eradicating the National Congress Party and bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The Sudanese group emphasized the need to establish a “just, inclusive, and democratic Sudan, free from the tyranny and brutality of the former regime.”

Sudan has been mired by fighting between the army, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, and the RSF.

At least 13,900 people have been killed and more than eight million displaced in the conflict that started in April 2023, according to UN figures.

Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators have failed to end the violence.
