RSF leader Dagalo meets UN and EU envoys on Sudan conflict

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo met UN secretary-general’s envoy for Sudan Ramtane Lamamra and EU envoy for Horn Of Africa Anita Weber to discuss the situation in the war-torn country.

RSF leader announced on Wednesday that he informed the UN envoy about the ongoing “war incited by the terror-driven former regime and its allies from within the Sudanese Armed Forces.”

“I emphasized to Mr. Lamamra our firm commitment to achieving peace and stability for the people of Sudan — to pave the way for a new Sudanese state based on equitable foundations and genuine civilian-led democratic rule that alleviates injustices for all Sudanese,” Dagalo said.

RSF leader on Thursday met with the EU’s envoy to Horn of Africa in Uganda’s capital Kampala.

RSF leader said he informed the EU envoy on the reasons for outbreak of war and how the Sudanese army, dominated by remnants of the former regime, are working to turn the conflict into a regional one.

Dagalo also said RSF is ready to stop the war in order to “alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people” and enter talks with the aim to end the Sudanese crisis and achieve stability and security.

“We hope for additional efforts from all brothers and friends of Sudan in the region and the world, primarily the European Union, and we look forward to their support and assistance to our people in these exceptional circumstances that they face due to this war,” Dagalo said.

Sudan has since April 15, 2023 been plunged into a civil war pitting army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The conflict has resulted in a devastating toll, with over 12,190 casualties and the displacement of more than seven million people, according to estimates by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project and UN figures, respectively.

Mediation efforts have faced significant obstacles due to deep-seated animosity between the rival factions. Despite Burhan’s administration continuing to issue statements as Sudan’s government, Dagalo’s Rapid Support Forces assert control over Khartoum’s streets, Darfur, and a substantial part of Al-Jazira, once Sudan’s vital agricultural region.
