Field sources said RSF forces are advancing towards Omdurman from the western axis, in what was described as an attempt to retake the city from SAF, a year after their withdrawal from the capital Khartoum.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show a large RSF force travelling along the road linking Omdurman with El Obeid, known as the export route, with the fighters saying they are heading towards the city.
After a year long absence from Khartoum, RSF forces are returning following what they describe as major gains in Kordofan and Darfur. The development comes as authorities based in Port Sudan have intensified calls for civilians to return to the capital, prompting warnings against drawing civilians into the conflict, using them as human shields, and exploiting their suffering, according to media.
