RSF pushes toward al-Obeid after key captures

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced new territorial gains in North Kordofan on Sunday, declaring advances toward the strategic city of Al-Obeid.

Though the RSF withheld exact locations, field sources reported the capture of Abu Haraz and Jebel Abu Qoud, southwest and west of Al-Obeid respectively. Abu Haraz lies 70 kilometres southwest of Al-Obeid, while Jebel Abu Qoud sits 54 kilometres west; both are key rural positions.

The RSF urged Al-Obeid residents to remain indoors and avoid General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s SAF installations and armed militia sites, promising protection for civilians. Their statement warned of potential clashes, stressing the importance of avoiding military zones to preserve civilian safety.

Last week, RSF renewed drone strikes and artillery fire inside Al-Obeid, giving a blow to the Burhan’s SAF. Sources said much of the shelling occurred at night, compounding fears and forcing many to seek shelter.

The intensity of military operations has sharply increased, with the RSF also capturing Umm Samima, 60 kilometres from the city. They reportedly repelled a Burhan’s army attempt to retake Umm Sayala, located in Bara locality, further straining their positions in the region.

Social media platforms circulated images of slain Sudan Shield Forces and Al-Baraa Brigades members ambushed by RSF fighters. Sources said the ambush highlighted a growing tactical gap, as SAF-aligned groups lacked equipment and drone support.
