The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Monday that they have reestablished control over Kalbus, a town located near the Chad border, amid ongoing clashes with a joint force aligned with General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF).
Kalbus is situated approximately 130 kilometers from El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, which has been under RSF control since November 2023.
The RSF released videos showcasing their presence at local government buildings and throughout Kalbus following confrontations with the joint force, claiming that some members of the opposing force had retreated into Chad.
Witnesses reported that the fighting between the RSF and the joint force has led to casualties on both sides.
The RSF confirmed its takeover of Kalbus via its official Telegram channel, although Joint Force spokesman Ahmed Hussein stated that confrontations were still occurring.
The joint force had seized control of Kalbus on October 7. Previously, the town was managed by the Qamar tribe, whose leadership successfully negotiated to prevent RSF attacks during the group’s initial advance in West Darfur last year.
The joint force had advanced to the Jabal Umm area east of Kalbus. However, the RSF managed to push back the joint forces from Jabal Umm, solidifying their grip on Kalbus and extending their control over West Darfur.
In a recent report, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) noted that approximately 1,000 families have fled Kalbus due to escalating security concerns, with many seeking refuge in border areas adjacent to Chad.
