RSF returns hundreds of looted livestock to authorities in Chad

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces returned several hundred looted livestock to authorities in Chad on Friday.

The animals, including camels, were reportedly taken by elements linked to Minni Minawi and Jibril Ibrahim’s movements, RSF said in a statement.

RSF officials framed the return as an act of governance, accusing rival factions of cross-border theft and banditry.

Minawi and Jibril abandoned neutrality in late 2023, joining General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and escalating clashes across North and West Darfur.

The handover carries strategic weight, helping secure supply lines and maintain relations with Chadian authorities near the border.

Over one million Darfuris have fled into eastern Chad since April 2023, straining communities already facing scarce resources.

Independent observers report systematic looting has devastated livelihoods, worsened famine conditions, and fueled a cross-border black market in Chad and Libya.

Livestock represents vital capital for Darfuri communities, and its theft intensifies economic vulnerability and intercommunal tensions.

The RSF’s gesture signals an attempt to assert authority, project legitimacy, and stabilise fragile border regions amid ongoing conflict.

Without broader security reforms, raids and illicit trade are likely to continue, complicating humanitarian aid and regional stability.
