The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said on Thursday it had repelled an attack on Um Baru in North Darfur, claiming heavy losses among the attacking forces and the seizure of dozens of military vehicles.
In a statement published on its Telegram channel, the RSF said its forces had defeated what it described as “mercenaries of the armed movements” attempting to advance on Um Baru.
The RSF linked the assault to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which it described as the “Muslim Brotherhood army,” saying the attack was intended to ease pressure created by recent battlefield advances by the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as TASIS, in Kordofan and Blue Nile.
According to the statement, RSF forces pursued the retreating troops after breaking the assault. It claimed that hundreds of fighters were killed and that more than 42 combat vehicles, along with weapons and ammunition, were captured.
The casualty figures and battlefield claims could not be independently verified.
Um Baru has emerged as an important position in North Darfur amid continuing fighting between the RSF and SAF-aligned forces and armed movements operating in the region.
The RSF also said its forces had been instructed to protect civilians, safeguard civilian property and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance in the area.
It urged residents to remain away from military positions and active combat zones as operations continued.
The latest confrontation comes as TASIS-aligned forces report advances across several fronts in Sudan, particularly in Kordofan and Blue Nile, increasing pressure on SAF and allied armed groups in contested areas.
