Sudanese alliance says RSF crushed key Baraa battalion in Kordofan

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Sudan Founding Alliance claimed major gains on Thursday in fighting around Abu Qoud in North Kordofan, saying they overran militants loyal to SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and destroyed elements of Islamist-aligned militias.

Mohamed al-Mukhtar al-Nour, the RSF’s legal adviser and a member of the alliance’s leadership body, said in a statement the forces seized about 90 fully equipped fighting vehicles and destroyed more than 13 others. He said “the most dangerous elements” of the Baraa Battalion and “Mujahideen” units were neutralised, alongside officers linked to the Islamic Movement and members of the former regime’s security apparatus.

Al-Nour described the victory as a tribute to “martyrs” and a step toward ending what he called Islamist rule.

War between the SAF and the RSF since April 2023 has devastated parts of Khartoum, Darfur and Kordofan, killing thousands and displacing millions.
