RSF says Sudanese army, extremist allies targeting civilians in Darfur

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces in a statement on Thursday accused the army of carrying out reprisal attacks against civilians.

On March 20 the army and its jihadist allies carried out indiscriminate air strikes targeting civilians on Al Fashir, Kabkabiya and Zurouq in North Darfur, RSF said.

Sudanese group strongly condemned army assaults on civilians and urged the international community and humanitarian organizations to denounce these acts.

RSF also accused the army and its allied jihadist militias of employing terror tactics such as dropping barrel bombs on crowds of civilians.

“These consistent, targeted attacks violate international and humanitarian law, contravening the Geneva Convention and universal principles,” RSF said.

“We assure residents of Darfur and communities all across Sudan that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is committed to overcoming the criminal elements linked to the former regime that have caused such significant turmoil and destruction in our country over the past three decades,” RSF added.

Sudan has been mired by fighting between the army, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, and the RSF.

At least 13,900 people have been killed and more than eight million displaced in the conflict that started in April 2023, according to UN figures.

Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators have failed to end the violence.
