Russia extends unrestricted military assistance to Sudan

Russia has extended an offer of comprehensive military aid to Sudan’s military, promising unrestricted support during high-level discussions between the two nations in Port Sudan last week.

The talks, spanning April 28-29, delved into enhancing cooperation across political, economic, and military fields.

A significant aspect of the discussions involved Russia’s proposal of military assistance to the Sudanese armed forces. The Russian proposal may encompass specialized training and potential Russian involvement within Sudan.

Led by Mikhail Bogdanov, President Putin’s envoy for the Middle East and Africa, the Russian delegation engaged with Sudan’s Sovereignty Council President, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and other council members.

The matter of a Russian naval base along the Red Sea coast, previously negotiated with former President Omer al-Bashir, resurfaced during discussions.

Following the former regime’s demise, Sudan opted to halt the implementation of this contentious base pending a decision by a future-elected legislative council.

In addition to military affairs, the Russian delegation sought insights into Sudan’s military ties with Ukraine, amid unconfirmed reports of Ukrainian special forces collaborating with Sudanese troops against the Rapid Support Forces.
