At least 11 people were killed and more than 20 others injured after a drone strike hit a crowded market in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, according to local and medical sources.
The airstrike targeted the Mawqif al-Geneina market area on Sunday evening and is widely believed to have been carried out by General al-Burhan’s army (SAF). The attack caused significant casualties and damage inside the market and surrounding neighborhoods.
Local residents told Darfur24 that some of the victims’ bodies have yet to be identified, while others were severely burned due to the intensity of the explosion.
Several of the wounded, who were transferred to Nyala Teaching Hospital, remain in critical condition, residents said.
The medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) confirmed in a statement that the drone strike killed at least 11 people and injured 20 others.
MSF said medical teams from South Darfur’s Ministry of Health treated the wounded at Nyala Teaching Hospital with logistical and medical support provided by the organization.
The group stressed that attacks on civilians are unacceptable and called on all parties to the conflict to take immediate steps to protect civilians and humanitarian workers.
Nyala experienced at least four explosions on Sunday — two in the morning and two later in the evening — as security tensions continue to escalate in the city.
