SAF intelligence accused of torturing pharmacist in North Kordofan

SAF General al-Burhan’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) is holding a local pharmacist incommunicado and has allegedly tortured her during interrogation, activists and family members told Darfur 24 on Saturday.

Witnesses said agents arrested Hekma Mahmoud Sardar on 16 June at her pharmacy in Al-Rahad’s main market without a warrant. She was taken to an undisclosed location; relatives later learned she was in GIS custody, accused of aiding the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Sources close to the family claim Sardar was beaten and subjected to other forms of abuse during the first days of detention. More than two weeks after her arrest she has not been brought before a judge or allowed to see legal counsel, fuelling concern among human-rights advocates.

GIS officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Both the SAF junta in Port Sudan has carried out mass detentions on suspicion of collaboration since civil war erupted in April 2023. In SAF-controlled areas some detainees have eventually been sent to court, but rights groups say due-process violations remain widespread.
