Schools reopen in Sudan’s Kassala despite cholera concerns

Schools in Sudan’s Kassala have resumed operations following a four-week closure implemented to contain a widespread cholera outbreak.

The closure was announced on September 1 by the Kassala Ministry of Education.

Maher Hussein, the director of the Education Ministry, confirmed the reopening of schools at all levels on Kassala TV.

Two weeks ago, over 22 schools were temporarily evacuated due to their use as shelters for displaced individuals.

Currently, Kassala authorities are accommodating more than 100,000 displaced people in 292 shelters across the region.

Over the past weekend, Ali Adam, the director of the Kassala Ministry of Health, reported a decline in cholera cases statewide.

Kassala locality recorded the highest number of infections, followed by West Kassala, Khashm El Girba, and New Halfa.

As of Friday, the cumulative number of cholera cases in Kassala reached 5,728, with 178 deaths.

Federal health authorities confirmed that 10 states collectively recorded 15,577 cholera cases and 506 deaths.

The ongoing conflict between Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has severely impacted infrastructure, leading to widespread hunger and disease.

In Northern State, authorities have ordered the closure of schools and markets to prevent further cholera outbreaks.
