Senegal edges Sudan in shootout for bronze

Senegal claimed the African Nations Championship (CHAN) bronze medal on Friday, defeating Sudan 4-2 in a tense penalty shootout. The Lions of Teranga recovered from an early deficit to draw 1-1 in regular time at Kampala’s Mandela Stadium.

Sudan struck first after six minutes, with Mohamed Tia Asad heading in a corner to put the underdogs ahead. Senegal pressed relentlessly against Sudan’s disciplined defence, finally equalising before the hour through Seyni Mbaye from Ousseynou Seck’s precise cross.

Sudan squandered a golden opportunity in the 82nd minute when Maaz Koko missed a clear chance one-on-one with the goalkeeper. In the decisive shootout, Senegal scored through Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse, and Libasse Gueye to secure victory.

Sudan’s Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen failed to convert, leaving the underdogs empty-handed in the dramatic contest. The bronze offered consolation for Senegal after a semi-final defeat to Morocco, losing 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Two-time champions Morocco now face Madagascar in Saturday’s CHAN final in Nairobi, seeking to reclaim continental supremacy once more. Senegal’s victory highlights resilience and determination, a proud moment for the Lions of Teranga despite missing out on back-to-back titles.
