The Civilian Democratic Revolutionary Alliance “Sumood” has condemned reports alleging that General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) has used chemical weapons in the ongoing war, calling it a grave crime and a violation of international law.
In a statement, Sumood said it is deeply alarmed by U.S. and international reports suggesting that the SAF have deployed chemical weapons in the conflict. The alliance described any such use as a serious breach of international humanitarian law and of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Sumood urged an immediate halt to the use of these weapons and called for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and relevant UN mechanisms to be granted full access to conduct an independent and transparent international investigation, so that those responsible can be held to account.
The alliance warned that the continuation of the war will only result in further crimes and abuses against civilians, stressing the need to end the conflict and reach a just, sustainable peace that provides redress for victims and punishes perpetrators.
